William "Smitty" Smith Chief Photographer
|
Born in 1950 to an Irish Mother from County Fermanagh and an English Father from Devon, Smitty grew up in the west end of Toronto and has lived there all his life.
His interest in photography began at the age sixteen when he borrowed a 35 mm camera to take snaps of friends at school. He set up his first darkroom and bought a used camera so he could learn more.
He started taking photography courses at Ryerson on Saturdays that lasted five years. That’s where he honed his skills behind the camera. He now takes digital photography courses at George Brown to learn the tricks of the trade.
After graduating high school he decided to travel to Europe, The British Isles, Ireland and North Africa, taking in the sights and photos along the way.
In 1975 he started working with the Toronto Board of Education so he could buy his first Nikon camera. The job lasted twenty five years until the year 2000 when he retired. The camera out lasted the job and it still works!
In November of 1999 Bill and his long time girlfriend Sandra eloped to Vancouver and were married at a Calgary Stampede Grey Cup Pancake Breakfast. The gang made a lovely pancake wedding cake for them.
Retiring has allowed them to travel and Smitty to pursue his interest in photography.
Smitty started working in the Irish community with Eamonn O’Loghlin and TIN in 1998. Over the years he has worked for many different societies, associations and groups.
He has also worked for the Canadian National Exhibition, the British Isles Show and other events around town. He has been published in Toronto Newspapers and Magazines, Irish Newspapers, International Connect and New York’s Irish Connections magazines.
Smitty had a showing of his photos in the summer of 2005 at P.J. O’Brien’s which was very well received.
Smitty and Sandra are avid fans of the Canadian Football League. Smitty saw his first game in 1957 at Varsity Stadium and worked the Fog Bowl in 1962. He has been an Argo season ticket holder for 35 years and has been to 30 Grey Cup Games.
